To be completely honest, I don't really need to do this.
I am blessed to have discovered this knowledge and way of thinking early in my life and to have built an unique and amazing life with my wife.
We don't need to work.
We live from our balanced portfolio of index funds. And we've built our plan so that it is safe even in the case of the worst market crash of the history of financial markets.
I am not paying myself from this business right now, and I run it mostly in my spare time, when the kids are sleeping.
But when you don't need to work, you can ask questions such as "What will I do now? What gives me purpose and meaning?"
And to me, the answer has always involved having a positive impact around me. That is what has driven my choice of studies (sustainability and energy management) and my career, always seeking to scale my impact through my work.
And impact is what is driving me now.
I am doing this because I want to have an impact at multiple levels:
1. Index investing and personal finance
2. Index investing and the financial industry
3. Financial Independence
4. Effective Altruism
The impact index investing and financial independence have had on my life and on my family is hard to overstate. We benefit from full financial security, freedom and confidence.
And that is something invaluable that unlocks so many aspects of our lives.
And I want you to benefit from it too. Because it will change your life too. And the lives of the people around you.
The impact of index investing on a personal level is incredible and I want as many people as possible to benefit from it.
While financial education can have a tremendous impact on the lives of the people who can get it, to me that is just the beginning.
My personal experience with the financial industry and my experience helping people who have deeply hurt by it makes me furious. It's unjust and it has to change.
Financial education is the first step, but real change needs to take place at the system level, either bottom-up as I have started doing or top-down. I am hoping we can change the standards of the financial service industry so that everyone can benefit from the simple power of index investing.
And we really need to stop paying insane fees to financial sales people that add very little value to their clients.
Financial independence is a great goal to have, and it's also an amazing title for attracting people's attention. But financial independence, just like money, is just a tool. A tool to make our lives better and to make the lives of people around us better.
To me financial independence isn't only that far-away goal of not depending on a job income anymore. To me it is the journey that starts today. For every euro that you save and invest, it's a little more power that you gain over your own life. With every euro, you build a bit more security and freedom, with in turns allow you to be more in control and lets you be your real self.
Money and financial independence to me are also tools to make the world a better place.
I am hoping to build a movement of people seeking financial freedom and impact. I am hoping to find people who will join me in using their financial powers to help make the world a better place.
I write a lot about this on a separate blog called Impactivated.
My research around what to do to have greater impact has led me to discover another incredible movement: effective altruism.
Effective altruism is a philosophy and social movement focused on answering one question: How can we best help others?
Our resources are limited, so we have to use them wisely. Effective altruism is the project of:
It is a movement that seeks to optimize for positive impact, using reason and evidence. Simply for the good of everyone. I invite you to explore.
I am as much a member of the effective altruism community a I am of the financial independence community.
In fact my ultimate ambitions lie within effective altruism, as that is where I will have the greatest impact.
My current work is simply a stepping stone towards that. I am building a community of financially aware people who know how to optimize their ressources for happiness and fulfillment. And part of that is impact.
I am also building a business that is committed to doing good. Through its services but also through its donation to high impact charities such as the Against Malaria Foundation (which one of the best options we have here from Belgium).
As such I have taken the Giving What We Can pledge and committed to donating at least 10% of any profit I make.
The rest goes back into developing the resources for the community and pays for the people in the team as well as the tools we use to run all this.
So that's my personal reward. Not a salary or pay, but a donation to a high impact charity that is doing extremely important work for people who need help the most.
The beauty of all this is that you don't need to buy into my personal values and commitment to charity, all you need to do is benefit from the work I do helping you getting started with index investing.
The positive impact you help me achieve is simply a bonus on top :-)
